Sleep

Protip:  In fifty year's time, plural 's' will be replaced by plural 'z'- cars -> carz, etc.  Also you can add extra z to indicated progressive plural: carzz is a set of group of cars, etc...  Although initially a precise measurement of magnitude of plurality, extra zs will eventually come to mean alot in a larger and larger sense in non formal speech.

mmm

Every now and then I just buy a cake and a tub of ice cream and eat cake and ice cream for every meal for 2 days.  I know I shouldn't, but I might as well do it now when I'm young and I don't put on weight, right?

Here we go again

So someone says one tiny thing today and my massive streak of feeling great I've been on since transmission dies.  Fucking great.  I should be focusing on whats going well and looking forward to summer, rather than dwelling on shit when I don't even know what I want.  Hmpf.

Oh, and I can't write what I want because of the off chance someone reads this.

Also I'm thinking of getting a new computer.  MSY says you can get a 500gb Hard drive for $77.  What the hell... how is that legal? (MSY: it probably isn't)

We've already lost control

It's pretty amazing to take a moment and look at where the world is heading (yeah, it's going to be one of those blog posts).  It's pretty goddamned amazing how far the world has come in say, the last 100 or even 50 years.  I really wonder about whether the trends which we are seeing today are going to continue or whether they will get to a point, and/or reverse.  Like, in the past 100 years the world has become as a whole amazingly more liberal and open minded.  You get to the point where in western societies these days being racist or sexist is pretty unacceptable.  Granted, you can find lots of counter examples but the general trend has been an amazing one towards tolerance, at least in public.  As the older generations die off we're getting to the point where the people running the world are ones who have always grown up in an environment where discrimination is considered unacceptable.
You always hear about the how the internet is this amazing tool for communication and how now knowledge and ideas can move so quickly and freely around the world, but you never really think about it or consider it, because its old people intellectual hippie bullshit you don't care about it, facebook facebook facebook.  But it really is pretty damn amazing, the way people can communicate these days.  And its not ever going to go away or become less so in the foreseeable future.  The world is becoming this ultra connected, evenly distributed society where pockets of society who don't want to mix are not going to be able to last much longer, or last in the same form as before.
Still, it's interesting to consider whether the current trend towards liberalization is going to keep going, or whether people will react against it and all it's facets - freedom of thought, sexual freedom, movements away from traditional organized religion. Shit, even the last one is an amazing thought by itself- what happens if the human race just eventually gives up religion? Would that prove anything?  We are really only at the very beginning of the information age, and I can't wait to see what society is like by the time I'm at the end of my life, even in a non technological way (which I think is ultimately more interesting than the technological advances that will come).
So yeah, what got me thinking about all of this was software freedom day.  Despite what I say, I really like open source software (although I think people need to be harsher on it to highlight it's shortcomings so it improves... but that's a topic for another time).  It's really the closest thing to communism there is in practice.  Don't believe me?  Open source is like communism, except more radical: not only does everyone get paid the same amount, but that amount is zero.  You don't get your position in an open source community from owning capital, or luck, but by displaying your skills and contributing to the project.  The people in the project decide where it goes, which relates to workplace democracy and the workers themselves deciding what they produce.  Imagine open source as a model for how industry would work in a communist society (granted software engineering is a little different to most industries; but most people in the know would consider software engineering one of the hardest things to consistently do right, so if it works in the hardest conditions, thats a pretty good reference)- people are generally free to choose what they work on.  You still have leaders and people shaping the project, but everyone has a say in where it is going, and those leaders are chosen by contribution to the project.
This blog entry didn't turn out anywhere near as well as I had hoped.

Bored

I am bored.  I can't find anything to do on the internet.  But I don't want to go to bed.  So I think I'll just start writing and see what happens.
I've had such a goddamned busy and stressful week (ref: previous post).  Glad that most of the critical stuff has been resolved, although I do have a stack of stuff left on my todo list, and a few extra ones I didn't have a few days ago.  Felt really good to do absolutely nothing tonight and get some well earned rest.  Also going to be goddamned sweet to be able to sleep in tomorrow for the first time since like, Sunday.  Can you believe that!  An entire working week of not being able to sleep in.  What the fuck.
So, it turns out by writing is really fuck boring when I don't have some specific clever or interesting topic to write about.  Sucks.
So like, politics.  Iemma got chucked out as premier today by the labor government today.  I'm not that impressed... as easy as it is to point to all the shit going wrong with the state government at the moment, none of it is Iemma's fault.  He seemed like such a sensible guy.  It's really quite a dilemma (Ho, I could have made a joke out of that).  I don't know if I could ever bring myself to vote liberal, but I also like to think I vote for the best objective candidate, not whom I like subjectively (which is what I think is wrong with democracy, because the vast majority of people can't think objectively and are fuckwits, and so vote for person X because he has whiter teeth than the other guy).  So I have to say it seems as though the liberals deserve a chance running the state.  However the problem to me doesn't seem to be with corruption within the government (which, although it exists, seems to be a bit overblown or mainly exist on a council level).  It's a problem with the public sector as a whole.  Part of that problem is that unions have too much power.  Mind you, I'm very pro union in general, but I think they really are like feminists.  They are coming from the right place and they are working to right things which are still wrong, but they seem to be less about equality and more about just gaining what they want.  Unions supossedly "protect workers rights" but in reality just want to gain as much as they can.  Which, when you have no rights, is the same thing, but once society gives you concessions and your plight really isnt that bad anymore, and you keep trying to push it further, people turn against you (like people have turned against the feminist movement post mid 80's).
What this all boils down to and why the situation looks so hopeless to me is the whole fiasco over privatising the state's electricty business.  Firstly, any sensible person knows this pretty much has to be done.  It is going to require an ungodly amount of investment to keep up with the infastructure needed to support our growing population, and unless you want more taxes, it's just going to have to be privatised.  The unions have too much power and make things too ineffecient here.  Of course the unions then don't want it privatised and used their clout in the labor party to nuke the deal and ultimately give Iemma the flick.  The thing that really shits me is that the fucking scum liberals were the ones who voted against it in parliament.  This is just fucking stupidity.  On any normal day, the liberals would be the ones pushing for it to be privatised and labor would be opposing it.  Having a sensible labor leader pushing for privatisation was a rare chance to solve a big problem this state was facing, and what the fuck.  The liberals of course knew the pressure was on Iemma and so opposed him for the sake of opposing him and get him sacked, rather than doing what was right and voting for the legisation which utimately is going to have to be passed somehow.  And so we see, the state liberals aren't any better.  They are willing to put aside what needs to be done for the chance to get back at labor, and so I really can't say with any confidence that replacing one set of wankers with another set is going to solve any fucking problems.
Lastly, I find it hard to be enthused to change our state government when theres no objective reference for the supposed problems we are having.  Everyone harps on about cityrail but honestly, I never have any problems with it.  Same with health.  Out budget had a $376 million surplus last year (yum yum gst monies) and fuck, I can't help but feel that for all the scandals and shit in the paper that this really isnt a bad place to live.  I fucking love this city.
Another thing that shits me: Governments using budget money to advertise projects they are doing, but in effect drumming up support for themselves under the guise of "informing" people.  Some stupid ad on tv today about how they are building the new metro link.  Um, ok?  What, do you need our fucking approval?  We don't need to goddamned know about it yet (since they said they are going ahead with it, they are not in the asking for ideas stage), just build the fucking thing.  Of course this isnt a state labor thing, it's accepted practice for everyone to do it (remember the unchain my heart liberal propoganda regarding the GST?).  I hate it when something that shouldn't be acceptable to any normal person becomes so because everyone does it.
Blah blah blah.

Well

Random thought found while googling (which I wish I could claim as my own):

"There really must be something to this shit ...
Do more people find inner peace at supermarkets or at raves?
If there were 5000 people who thought the produce section was truly a mind blowing cosmic fucking place to be would Safeway not have the same cultish draw and underground mystique? "
